Model Positioning Systems
Designed to work in concert with AEROLAB Sting Force/Moment Balances, a model positioning system allows easy, accurate changes in wind tunnel test model attitude. Systems are available for subsonic, transonic and supersonic applications. Options such as a Data Acquisition, Display and Control System, and stepper motor drives for pitch and yaw (subsonic only) are available. AEROLAB can design a custom model positioning system to fit your existing wind tunnel and meet your exact needs. Contact AEROLAB for more detail.

Detailed Description:
Two groups of AEROLAB model positioning systems are available – subsonic and tran/supersonic. As with all AEROLAB products, these model positioning systems are substantial devices.
Subsonic Model Positioning Systems:
- AEROLAB subsonic wind tunnel model positioning systems employ “parallelogram” arms to control test model pitch angle. Arm lengths are carefully chosen to ensure the test model remains centered in the test section regardless of pitch angle. For most applications, AEROLAB systems can offer +/- 30 degrees of pitch adjustment. Optional yaw control is accomplished by pivoting the device on a precision, zero-backlash gearbox.

- To provide a stable platform, system base plates are made from ¾-inch (1.9cm) thick steel plate. Leveling adjustments are made with threaded foot-pads. Pitch movement is actuated through an industrial-grade, precision gear box.
Tran/Supersonic Model Positioning Systems:
- AEROLAB Tran/Supersonic model positioning systems employ a cogged “quadrant” to control test model pitch angle. Unlike AEROLAB subsonic model positioning systems, adjustable yaw or roll is not offered. The quadrant size is carefully chosen to ensure the test model remains centered in the test section regardless of pitch angle. For most applications, AEROLAB systems can offer +/- 15 degrees of pitch adjustment.

Sting Force / Moment balance with model postioning system for 2-inch tunnel
- Although the quadrant is made of steel, most components are made of anodized aluminum. Precision bearings and gears offer smooth operation with minimal backlash or hysteresis.
- Although adaptable to any wind tunnel, these model positioning systems were designed specifically for AEROLAB Transonic and Supersonic wind tunnels.
